The entire Golf has a strategic importance for the safety of birds, being an IBA (Important Bird Area). In this land it is practiced a diversified agriculture which has helped the existence of endangered birds, such as Collared Pratincole Glareola pratincola, Stone-curlew Burhinus oedicnemus, Lesser Kestrel Falco naumanni and the Whit Stork Ciconia ciconia; moreover, in some places an untouched nature is still existing, rich of biodiversity. Examples of these places are the sandy dunes with vegetal species as the Leopoldia Leopoldia gussonei and the Retama raetam subsp. gussonei.
For this reason the European Community identified some areas to protect and valorize: in particular Manfria Tower, Biviere, the Plain of Gela, the Cork forest of Niscemi, the wood of Santo Pietro and Macconi Beach. For further information ask the Didactic Museum of Natural History of Niscemi.
